Dr Cult-O M.E. Reviews “Brawl in Cell Block 99”

REVIEW:
S. Craig Zahler…. Creator of “Bone Tomahawk” is one of the genre bending directors with original ideas that will change movies. His latest film is a crime and punishment parable about a beaten family man in the lowest rung of the social ladder. Vince Vaughan is Bradley ( don’t call me BRAD!), a hulking man of conviction and a moral compass. When he gets crossed, watch out. In one scene, Bradley destroys his wife’s car with his bloody fists.

He goes back to a life of crime for money to save his marriage and a baby on the way. Things go predictably south fast with a tangled drug deal, and cops are killed. Convicted without a deal to the penal system (detailed with soul crushing results), our anti-hero is now threatened by the cartel he turned on… revenge has a price.

Zahler peppers the movie with relentless violence and staged fight sequences that are literally mud-stomping, bone crunching movie action.

Vaughan is superb in an Eastwood way, quiet and commanding performance with touching little moments of Bradley crying. Don Johnson is cast as a cool, calm and totally menacing warden who is the same man as Bradley, a nice touch. The title says it all. Great movie on Amazon Prime. Must see!
